The developing world’s agriculture challenge
In a world in which the population is forecast to grow by 2 billion people by 2050 with demand for food expected to double in that time, innovative technological developments will be key to being able to help farmers grow enough to feed the world.
The challenge will be compounded further as climate change puts even more pressure on resources, requiring farmers to adapt to harshening conditions and make use of technological innovations in order to survive.
The greatest demand for food will come from developing countries, which will see almost all of the forecast population growth and many areas of which are also expected to be hard hit by climate change.
Hundreds of millions of people in Africa and Asia already face grave hunger challenges. Food security for developing countries will be key to maintaining their growth and will constitute one of the major challenges to global security this century.
Israel, with its own experience of growing from a country with an agricultural capacity similar to those seen in developing countries has developed into a global leader in agriculture and water management. Israel can provide insights and solutions to governments and commercial enterprises to implement agricultural solutions for the needs of developing nations.
IMPROVATE connects developing countries to find the solutions they require by bringing leaders together, at its inaugural conference in Tel Aviv in June 2021, with Israeli technology companies at the forefront of the field, to strengthen their agricultural sectors in a market worth trillions of dollars globally.
“I have come to see first-hand just how much Israel has to offer others from its experience in “making the desert bloom”- building a thriving agriculture sector under conditions of considerable adversity.” – Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and Chairman of IMPROVATE conference.
Having overcome a lack of natural resources, and an arid, inhospitable environment for agriculture to be able to grow more from less and ensure independent food security, Israel is uniquely positioned to help developing countries find solutions to challenges in the agricultural field.
Israel has decades of experience in helping developed nations in agriculture through providing assistance via the MASHAV Agency for International Development Cooperation and various NGOs that have brought Israeli-developed technologies, such as drip irrigation to developing nations, helping them increase yields and conserve water. Now, as modern agriculture becomes more data and technology oriented, Israel, with its advanced innovation ecosystem, has blossomed into a world leader in agricultural technologies.
Israeli technology can help developing countries transform their agricultural ecosystems by making the sector more efficient, reducing dependence on foreign aid, increase their ability to deal with crises, and become net exporters of agricultural products.
